Tech Data adds TomTom GPS product line to portfolio
Tech Data recently added the TomTom GPS product line to its portfolio. In these days of $3.50 to $4 per gallon gasoline, that may be a leading indicator.
According to PND, Garmin rules the U.S. with a runaway market share of 47 percent. TomTom takes second at 19 percent and Magellan in third with 17 percent. In Europe, it's a different story with TomTom's market-leading 38 percent share, followed by Garmin at 19%. Magellan isn't a major player. (TomTom is based in Amsterdam.)
By taking on TomTom, Tech Data is confirming what we already know, that GPS has become increasingly important, and I don't mean for fathers and husbands who never had the gumption to stop and ask for directions. GPS is important in business. Truck fleet management. Courier and delivery service route planning. Making sure that snowplows are working on their assigned roads. Even UPS has instructed its drivers to favor right turns over left ones to save fuel.
Sure, not every integrator sells or develops applications that call for GPS enablement. But if your customers have a fleet of vehicles -- appliance repairmen in their vans, school buses, and municipal buses for starters – there's a good opportunity just waiting. Especially in municipalities hit hard by rising fuel prices, the search is on to find ways to save every precious drop.
